I’ve encountered many business owners who sound like Alice in her Adventures in Wonderland.

Upon coming to a fork in the road, Alice inquires of the Cheshire Cat which road she should take.

Alice: Would you tell me please, which way I ought to go?

The Cat: It depends a good deal on where you want to get to.

Alice: I don’t much care where.

The Cat: Then it really doesn’t matter which way you go.

Too many business owners operate their businesses like Alice wandering around Wonderland. Alice has many adventures but no real purpose. Without a destination in your business, how will you know when you’ve arrived?!

It’s easy to relate to Alice. Afterall, sometimes we feel really tiny in the face of problems and sometimes we tower over them. During the first few years in business especially, we see confusing and new situations that we could never have imagined. (I mean, really. Who DOES that?!) We encounter things that make absolutely no sense, but with which we are required to deal.

However if we want to be successful, we MUST resist the Alice who “doesn’t much care” where she goes.

Now, I can hear you objecting. “I know what I want. I want to be successful.” But have you defined exactly what “success” means for you? What does it look like, feel like, smell like? Write it down, describe it. If you can’t put it into words, it’s not real enough. Be specific. Put numbers and boundaries around it. Give it a deadline.

Now, ask yourself WHY  you want the success you just defined. Is it financial freedom? Perhaps you want to give back to the community. Maybe your why is just personal accomplishment. You decide what feels right for you. This is your purpose.

Once you define success and purpose you must set deliberate and results-driven goals that will lead you directly to the success you desire. [Read Me! Goals must be written down and reviewed!!]

The road to success may not be smooth or easy (in fact, I can almost guarantee it won’t be) but when you can clearly see your destination, feel it, smell it, the effort you must expend to get there feels easier.

You don’t have to eat strange cake or drink mystery potions to have the adventure of your life. Just define what success looks like to you, clearly understand your purpose then set and write down your goals. It’s the best way to come out the other side of the rabbit hole.
