You’ve heard the whole “is the glass half full or half empty” query, right? This always seems like a “you are right or wrong scenario to me. Somehow no matter how you answer, you are exposing some kind of weakness.
But I believe that no matter how you see the glass, you can reach your goals!
Take Dory and Marlin from “Finding Nemo,” for example. It is safe to say that Marlin saw the glass not only as half empty but full of danger. Dory saw everything as an adventure. Despite their vast differences in worldview, they were successful in their mission to get to “P. Sherman 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney”.
The thing that made the difference was drive. Both Marlin and Dory were DETERMINED to reach their goal, but they went about differently.
Dory faced each challenge as a matter of course. She barely noticed that anything was wrong. She was unaware of what Marlin determines as danger. The phrase “ignorance is bliss” comes to mind. As a business owner, if you can see the challenges in your business as adventures and new territory to be charted, you can avoid the discouragement that accompanies the necessary down times in business.
When we started our business we were unaware that the USA was in the midst of a recession. Our determination to be successful was unaffected by external factors. Like Dory we just kept swimming in pursuit of our goal. Even thought the prevailing wisdom said our business should fail, we grew and prospered.
Marlin, by all rights, should never have achieved his goal. He was bowed by every circumstance in the water. However, despite his pessimistic attitude he overcame every obstacle because his DESIRE was unshakable. He was going to save his son. There was no other outcome that he would allow to enter his mind. You can have a very successful business, even if you see the danger around every turn. Like Marlin, acknowledging the challenge only illuminates the need to overcome it. A benefit to this perspective is the ability to face reality. The power of the goal enables you to face reality but not be undermined by it.
Your view of “The Glass” is neither good nor bad. If you understand that your view is part of who you are, you can navigate the ebbs and flows of business with ease.
So, no matter how you see the proverbial glass, let us drink to YOUR SUCCESS! Cheers!
