I have had many businesses over the years. My first was a direct selling company that my friend convinced me was a great way to get out of the house and have some adult time away from my kids. I started it as a hobby and, though my upline tried to encourage me, it hardly made it past the hobby stage.
Then I tried a new company, reasoning that the market was too flooded with reps from the previous one. Oh, we had high hopes for this new endeavor and floundered when we didn’t get enough support, as we were located remotely from our supervisor.
Another opportunity presented itself and the numbers all looked good. There was a lot of money to be made and the residuals were incredible. Finally, I could get in on something that had some rebound for all my efforts. I tried to believe in the product and the model but there was just something missing.
Oh! And then I tried the company with the fantastic product that was going to revolutionize the industry. That is, until the product failed and was pulled from the market.
It was only when I removed one small, innocuous, 3-letter word from my business vocabulary that things changed. It’s a word that is used every day by nearly everyone and in a myriad of situations. This word is so insidious that it can decimate your resolve, your motivation and your will.
That word is try.
When we started our current business, we made a conscious effort not to “try” this business. We were going to DO the business. Failure was not an option.
Yoda really got it right when he advised young Skywalker, “Do or do not, there is no try.”
Why? Trying leaves the door open for failure or at least a quick exit. If you try it and you don’t like it, you can leave. If you try it on for size and it’s just not the right fit, take it off. This is great for shopping. It’s fantastic for sampling new foods. It can be a death knell for business.
Business is hard. It’s not for the faint of heart and there really are no get-rich-quick businesses. Well, none that are legal. Especially for entrepreneurs. You may need to fill every job in the company. You will have times when sales are great and times when you feel like you are in the desert. You will get frustrated. You will put in long hours. But stick with it and it will pay off.
Replace your “try” with “do.” Replace your quick exit strategy with “failure is not an option.” Change your outlook. Set your resolve and then see how you fly!
